Third Person

Why do I find myself referring to myself in the third person when talking to Ainsworth? It's something I'd heard others do and hoped I'd never do myself, but instinctively I refer to myself as "Daddy" instead of as "I".

Why would I do such a thing?

My mommy does it to me, too. She says it's an instinctive parental behavior (so when you do it, it means you have good parental instincts). For us babies to figure out labeling and nouns and so forth, we need you to call yourself by name; we're processing so much information these days that we don't have any capacity left to process pronouns (or any other name that applies to more than one object - how confusing!). We'll be 3 to 5 years old before the pronoun thing is in our grasp. So keep on referring to yourself like you're the king of England, no matter how silly it feels. One day, Ainsworth will thank you. Well, he may not actually remember what you've done to thank you, but he'll do it by doing well in school or something else intelligent.

Well that stinks that a little kid has such a better explanation then I could ever come up with.

I'm thinking that I should have stuck with the third person longer since my daughter has started calling me "New Guy" recently.

I still refer to myself in the third person when talking to my 10 and 11 year olds about schedules. I guess it's from writing "kid name" appt 10:30 or "kid name" soccer 6pm or "mom" appt 8am or chore list assignments.

Besides, unless you and Rachel are going around calling each other mommy and daddy, how else is he to learn what he should call you?
